🚨 2025 Rivian EDV 700: Emergency Neutral

The 2025 Rivian EDV 700 uses a column-mounted electronic gear selector with Park, Reverse, Neutral, and Drive positions.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and chocked if possible
  2. Locate the shift lock override release on the left side of the steering column shroud, below the gear selector stalk
  3. Remove the small circular or rectangular cap covering the override slot using a small flathead screwdriver or trim tool
  4. Insert the screwdriver into the exposed override slot and press firmly inward
  5. While holding the override depressed, move the gear selector from Park to Neutral
  6. The vehicle can now roll - use extreme caution as there is no power braking assist
Shift-lock override location
Left side of steering column shroud, directly below the gear selector stalk - small cap covers mechanical override slot
With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power: The mechanical shift lock override functions without any 12V power, allowing you to shift to Neutral. However, without power you will have NO power steering, NO power brakes, and NO vehicle systems. The EDV 700 is extremely heavy - flatbed towing is mandatory. Do not attempt to push or roll the vehicle any distance.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
MANDATORY FLATBED ONLY: The EDV 700 is a large commercial electric van weighing 8,500+ lbs with significant battery mass low in the chassis. Never use wheel-lift or dolly towing methods. If the 12V system is completely dead, you must use the mechanical shift override to access Neutral, then winch onto a flatbed with all wheels rolling freely. Attempting to drag the vehicle in Park will cause severe drivetrain damage.
