🚨 2001 Rolls-Royce Corniche: Emergency Neutral

The 2001 Corniche uses a traditional column-mounted shift lever with a mechanical shift lock that requires brake pedal depression.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and apply the parking brake firmly
  2. Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if battery has any charge remaining
  3. Locate the shift lock override - look for a small cover or access point near the base of the column shifter where it meets the steering column
  4. Use a small flathead screwdriver or similar tool to remove the override cover
  5. Press and hold the shift lock release button/tab with the screwdriver while simultaneously moving the shift lever to Neutral
  6. If successful, the shift lever should move freely to N
  7. Once in Neutral, turn ignition to OFF and remove key if needed for towing
Shift-lock override location
Near the base of the column shifter where it meets the steering column, typically covered by a small removable cap
With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the shift lock override is purely mechanical and will still function. You may need to manually turn the steering column lock by inserting the key and using force, or have the steering wheel unlocked before attempting to shift. The override mechanism does not require battery power.
