🚨 2010 Rolls-Royce Ghost: Emergency Neutral

The 2010 Ghost (first generation) uses a column-mounted gear selector stalk on the right side of the steering column, derived from BMW's ZF 8-speed automatic transmission architecture.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and apply the parking brake (or have wheel chocks in place).
  2. Insert the key fob into the dashboard receptacle to enable accessory power if battery has any remaining charge.
  3. Press the brake pedal firmly.
  4. Locate the shift lock override access on the steering column near the base of the gear selector stalk.
  5. Remove the small circular cover cap on the column shroud (use a small flat tool if needed to pry gently).
  6. Insert a small flathead screwdriver or similar tool into the override slot revealed beneath the cap.
  7. While pressing down on the override mechanism, move the column stalk to Neutral.
  8. The transmission should release into Neutral, allowing the vehicle to roll.
Shift-lock override location
Small covered access hole located on the steering column shroud near the base of the gear selector stalk, typically on the right side of the column housing.
With zero electrical power
With a completely dead battery, you must use the physical key blade (hidden in the key fob) to unlock the door. The shift lock override works mechanically without electrical power, but the steering column will remain locked. Flatbed towing is required as you cannot steer the vehicle.
