🚨 1991 Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit: Emergency Neutral

The 1991 Silver Spirit uses a column-mounted lever with mechanical linkage and emerging electronic shift interlock systems.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and the vehicle is on level ground.
  2. Turn the ignition key to the ON or ACC position.
  3. Depress the brake pedal; if the shifter does not release, proceed to manual override.
  4. Look for a shift lock override access point near the base of the column shifter where it meets the steering column—may be covered by a small cap or trim piece.
  5. Remove any cover and insert a small flathead screwdriver into the override slot.
  6. Press and hold the override mechanism while moving the shifter to Neutral.
Shift-lock override location
Near the base of the column shifter assembly at the steering column; look for a small access slot or removable cover
With zero electrical power
If the vehicle has no electrical power, turn the key to ACC position (mechanical unlock) and attempt shifting with brake pedal depressed. If this fails, you may need to provide temporary 12V power to the vehicle's electrical system to enable the shift lock override. Otherwise, vehicle must be loaded onto flatbed with wheels off the ground.
