🚨 1993 Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit: Emergency Neutral

The 1993 Silver Spirit uses a column-mounted lever shifter with electronic shift interlock controlled by the brake-light switch.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and the vehicle is on level ground.
  2. Turn the ignition key to the ON position.
  3. Press the brake pedal firmly; if the shifter does not release, proceed to the manual override.
  4. Locate the shift lock override access point near the base of the column shifter assembly at the steering column.
  5. Remove any small cover or trim piece concealing the override slot.
  6. Insert a small flathead screwdriver into the slot and press the override release.
  7. While holding the override depressed, move the shift lever to Neutral.
Shift-lock override location
Near the base of the column shifter where it meets the steering column; look for a small access slot or cover
With zero electrical power
If the vehicle has completely dead electrical power, turn the key to ACC position (mechanical steering unlock) and attempt to shift with brake pedal depressed. This may work if the shift lock has a mechanical component. If unsuccessful, provide temporary 12V power by jump-starting to enable the override mechanism. Without any power, the vehicle must be loaded onto a flatbed.
