⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and the vehicle is on level ground
- Locate the shift lock override slot on the right side of the shifter base console, beneath a small rectangular cover/cap
- Use a flathead screwdriver or the emergency key blade to carefully pry off the override cover
- Insert the emergency key blade or a small flathead screwdriver into the override slot
- While pressing the key/tool firmly into the slot to release the shift lock, press the brake pedal (if any residual power exists) and move the shifter to neutral
- If no power exists at all, maintain pressure on the override release while manually shifting to neutral without pressing the brake
Shift-lock override location
Right side of the shifter console base, under a small rectangular trim cap approximately 1-2 inches from the shifter lever
With zero electrical power
With zero power, the override slot still functions mechanically—maintain firm pressure on the release tool while moving the shifter. The steering lock may also engage with no power, making steering difficult during towing.
