🚨 2001 Saab 9-3: Emergency Neutral

The 2001 9-3 (first generation) uses a traditional console-mounted floor shifter with a mechanical shift lock solenoid linked to the brake pedal.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the parking brake is engaged and the vehicle is on level ground
  2. Locate the shift lock override access—on the left side of the shifter base, there is a small rectangular or circular cover near the base of the shifter lever
  3. Use a flathead screwdriver or similar tool to carefully pry off the override cover
  4. Insert a small flathead screwdriver, key, or similar rigid tool into the override slot
  5. Press firmly down on the tool to mechanically depress the shift lock release while simultaneously moving the shifter from Park to Neutral
  6. If no power is available, maintain steady pressure on the override while shifting
Shift-lock override location
Left side of the shifter console base, under a small trim cover near the shifter lever boot—look for a rectangular or round cap approximately 1 inch from the lever
With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the shift lock override still functions purely mechanically. The key will not turn in the ignition without power, but you can still shift to neutral using the override. Steering will be locked, making towing difficult—flatbed is strongly recommended.
