- Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and the wheels are chocked
- Turn the ignition key to position I (accessory) if possible to provide some electrical power
- Locate the shift lock override slot—look for a small rectangular cover or access slot on the left side of the shifter base near the console trim
- Use a small flathead screwdriver or similar tool to gently pry off the override cover if present
- Insert the screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously pulling the shifter release button
- While holding the override down and the release button in, move the shifter from Park to Neutral
- If no electrical power is available and the override does not work, the vehicle may need to be placed on a flatbed with the front wheels raised
