The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly set and wheels are properly chocked
- Insert the key and turn to position I or II if any battery power remains
- Locate the shift lock override access—there is a small rectangular cover or slot near the shifter base, typically on the driver's side of the shifter console
- Remove the override cover using a small flathead screwdriver if it's a separate piece
- Insert a screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the override slot and press down firmly
- While holding the override mechanism down, press the shifter release button and move the shifter to Neutral
