🚨 2004 Saab 9-3: Emergency Neutral

The 2004 Saab 9-3 has a console-mounted automatic transmission shifter with electronic shift lock that prevents movement out of Park without brake application and proper ignition position.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Engage the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels securely
  2. Turn the ignition key to position I (accessory) if battery has any remaining charge
  3. Locate the shift lock override slot at the base of the shifter assembly—look for a small rectangular opening or removable cover on the driver's side of the shifter base
  4. If there's a cover, carefully pry it off with a small flathead screwdriver
  5. Insert a screwdriver, key, or similar rigid tool into the override slot and press down firmly
  6. While maintaining pressure on the override, press the shifter release button and move the gear selector to Neutral
  7. Release the override tool once the shifter is in Neutral
Shift-lock override location

With zero electrical power
The mechanical override should function without electrical power. If completely dead and the override doesn't release the shifter, or if the steering column lock is engaged, you'll need to provide at least accessory power via jump pack or jumper cables. Without any ability to unlock the steering or shifter, the vehicle must be loaded onto a flatbed with front wheels raised.
