The procedure
- Set the parking brake and ensure wheels are chocked front and rear
- Insert the key and turn to position I or II if any battery voltage is available
- Find the shift lock override access point—a small rectangular slot or cover at the base of the shifter console, typically on the left (driver's) side of the shifter
- If a cover is present, use a small flathead screwdriver to gently pry it off
- Insert a screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the override slot and depress it firmly
- While holding the override down, press the shifter release button on the shifter itself and pull the shifter toward you to move it to Neutral
- Once in Neutral, remove the override tool and verify the shifter remains in Neutral position
