🚨 2005 Saab 9-3: Emergency Neutral

The 2005 Saab 9-3 uses a floor-mounted console automatic transmission shifter with electronic shift interlock that requires brake pedal input and correct ignition position to release from Park.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Set the parking brake and ensure wheels are chocked front and rear
  2. Insert the key and turn to position I or II if any battery voltage is available
  3. Find the shift lock override access point—a small rectangular slot or cover at the base of the shifter console, typically on the left (driver's) side of the shifter
  4. If a cover is present, use a small flathead screwdriver to gently pry it off
  5. Insert a screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the override slot and depress it firmly
  6. While holding the override down, press the shifter release button on the shifter itself and pull the shifter toward you to move it to Neutral
  7. Once in Neutral, remove the override tool and verify the shifter remains in Neutral position

With zero electrical power
The shift lock override is mechanical and should work without electrical power. However, with a completely dead battery, the steering column lock will likely be engaged and cannot be released without at least accessory power. If you cannot get the shifter to release or the steering remains locked, a jump start or battery replacement is required for minimal system power, or the vehicle must be transported on a flatbed with drive wheels off the ground.
