🚨 2006 Saab 9-3: Emergency Neutral

The 2006 Saab 9-3 features a console-mounted automatic shifter with electronic shift lock interlock preventing shifting out of Park without brake input and proper ignition state.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Firmly engage the parking brake and place chocks at the wheels
  2. Turn the ignition key to at least position I (accessory) if any battery power is available
  3. Locate the shift lock override—look for a small rectangular slot or removable cover near the base of the shifter on the driver's side of the console
  4. If a plastic cover is present, carefully pry it off using a small flathead screwdriver
  5. Insert a screwdriver, key, or similar rigid tool into the override slot and press down firmly
  6. While maintaining downward pressure on the override, press the shifter release button and move the shifter from Park to Neutral
  7. Remove the tool once Neutral is engaged and verify the shifter stays in position

With zero electrical power
The mechanical shift lock override should function without battery power. However, a completely dead battery will also engage the steering column lock, which cannot be released mechanically. If the override doesn't work or steering is locked, you must provide at least accessory-level power through a jump start or portable jump pack. If no power can be provided, the vehicle must be transported on a flatbed with the front wheels off the ground.
