🚨 2007 Saab 9-3: Emergency Neutral

The 2007 Saab 9-3 uses a center console-mounted automatic transmission shifter with an electronic shift lock system that requires brake pedal depression and ignition power to shift out of Park.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and wheels are chocked.
  2. Turn the ignition to ON position (ACC will not work - you need ON/II position for shift lock release).
  3. Locate the shift lock override slot - it is a small rectangular opening with a plastic cover on the left side of the shifter base, near where the shifter meets the console.
  4. Use a small flathead screwdriver or similar tool to carefully remove or flip open the plastic cover.
  5. Insert the screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously pressing the brake pedal (if electrical power is available).
  6. While holding the override down, press the shifter button and move the shifter to Neutral.
  7. If successful, the vehicle can now be moved or towed. Keep ignition in ON position if steering lock needs to be released.

With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery: The shift lock override will still work mechanically, but you will need to manually release the steering lock (extremely difficult) or have the vehicle flatbedded. The override allows shifter movement, but without power the steering will lock when turned. Best practice is to jump-start the 12V battery first, get ignition to ON, then use the override procedure.
