The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and wheels are chocked.
- Turn the ignition to ON position (ACC will not work - you need ON/II position for shift lock release).
- Locate the shift lock override slot - it is a small rectangular opening with a plastic cover on the left side of the shifter base, near where the shifter meets the console.
- Use a small flathead screwdriver or similar tool to carefully remove or flip open the plastic cover.
- Insert the screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously pressing the brake pedal (if electrical power is available).
- While holding the override down, press the shifter button and move the shifter to Neutral.
- If successful, the vehicle can now be moved or towed. Keep ignition in ON position if steering lock needs to be released.

With completely dead battery: The shift lock override will still work mechanically, but you will need to manually release the steering lock (extremely difficult) or have the vehicle flatbedded.
