⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly applied and the vehicle is on level ground or properly chocked
- Turn the ignition key to the ON position if battery power is available; if the battery is dead, proceed to manual override
- Locate the shift lock override slot—on the 1995 SL, look for a small covered slot or access point near the base of the shifter assembly, typically on the left or front side
- Remove the small plastic cover (if present) by prying gently with a flathead screwdriver
- Insert a flathead screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the override release slot
- Press down or push inward on the override mechanism while simultaneously moving the shifter from Park to Neutral
- Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be pushed or loaded onto a flatbed
Shift-lock override location
Near the base of the shifter console; look for a small covered slot or access opening, typically on the left or forward side of the shifter base assembly
With zero electrical power
With a completely dead battery, the shift lock override is fully mechanical on the 1995 SL. No electrical power is needed to use the override release. The steering column will remain locked, so towing must be done with the front wheels raised or on a flatbed.
