🚨 1997 Saturn SL: Emergency Neutral

The 1997 Saturn SL uses a floor-mounted console shifter with a button on the front of the handle and a mechanical shift-lock override.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels.
  2. Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if possible (provides power to shift-lock solenoid).
  3. Press the brake pedal and press the shifter button, then move to Neutral.
  4. If the shifter will not release from Park, locate the shift-lock override slot on the console near the shifter base—look for a small rectangular cap or slot on the driver's side of the shifter, typically just forward or to the left of the shifter base.
  5. Remove the cap by prying gently with a flat-blade screwdriver or popping it out with your fingers.
  6. Insert a flat-blade screwdriver, key, or the emergency override tool (if present) into the slot and press down firmly—this mechanically releases the shift-lock.
  7. While holding the override down, press the shifter button and move the shifter to Neutral.
  8. Remove the tool and replace the cap once the vehicle is in Neutral.

With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the shift-lock override is purely mechanical and does not require battery voltage. The override slot physically disengages the lock pawl, allowing you to shift to Neutral even with a completely dead battery. You will not be able to turn the steering wheel or use power brakes, so ensure the vehicle is on level ground and properly chocked before attempting to move it.
