⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels.
- Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if possible (this provides power to release the shift lock).
- Press the brake pedal and the shifter button, then move to Neutral.
- If the brake-light switch has failed or there is no electrical power, locate the shift lock override slot—it is a small covered slot on the console to the right of the shifter base.
- Remove the cover (it may be a small rubber cap or plastic trim piece that pries out gently).
- Insert a small flat-blade screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the override slot and press down firmly.
- While holding the override down, press the shifter button and move the shifter to Neutral.
- Remove the tool and replace the cover.
Shift-lock override location
Small covered slot on the console to the right of the shifter base, typically with a removable rubber cap or plastic cover.
With zero electrical power
With a completely dead battery, the ignition key will not turn to ACC. Use the shift lock override slot method: remove the cover near the shifter base, insert a tool into the override slot, press down, and shift to Neutral while holding the override.
