🚨 1993 Saturn SW: Emergency Neutral

The 1993 Saturn SW wagon uses a conventional console-mounted automatic shifter with a button-release mechanism and electronic shift interlock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels.
  2. Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if possible (this provides power to release the shift lock).
  3. Press the brake pedal and the shifter button, then move to Neutral.
  4. If the brake-light switch has failed or there is no electrical power, locate the shift lock override—it is typically a small covered slot or access point near the shifter base on the console.
  5. Remove the small cover or trim piece (may be a rubber cap that pries out).
  6. Insert a small flat-blade screwdriver or similar tool into the override access and press down to mechanically release the shift lock.
  7. While holding the override down, press the shifter button and move the shifter to Neutral.
  8. Remove the tool and replace the cover.
Shift-lock override location
Small covered slot near the shifter base on the console; exact location may vary but typically on the right side of the shifter or in the front of the shifter boot area.
With zero electrical power
With a completely dead battery, use the shift lock override access point near the shifter base. Insert a tool to mechanically release the lock and shift to Neutral while holding the override.
