🚨 1996 Saturn SW: Emergency Neutral

The 1996 Saturn SW wagon uses a traditional floor-mounted console shifter with a push-button shift lock release.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and wheels are chocked.
  2. Locate the shift lock override button on the console - it is a small rectangular button/slot directly in front of the shifter knob base, between the shifter and the console's front edge.
  3. Remove the small plastic cover cap over the override slot if present (it may be labeled or unmarked).
  4. Insert a small flathead screwdriver or ignition key into the override slot.
  5. Press down firmly on the override mechanism while simultaneously pressing the shifter button and moving the shifter to Neutral.
  6. If the vehicle has no electrical power, you may need to apply more force to the override - the shift lock is mechanical but spring-loaded.
  7. Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be moved or loaded onto a flatbed.

With zero electrical power
The shift lock override on these Saturn models is mechanical and works without 12V power. You may need to apply firm pressure to compress the override mechanism. The override is accessed the same way regardless of battery state.
