⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and apply the parking brake firmly
- Turn the ignition to ON position if 12V power is available (do not start engine)
- Locate the small rectangular shift lock override cap on the right side of the shifter base, near the button side
- Use a flathead screwdriver or similar tool to carefully pry off the override cap
- Press and hold the override button inside the cavity with the screwdriver while simultaneously pressing the main shifter button
- Move the shifter to N (Neutral) position while holding both buttons
- If the vehicle needs to be towed, ensure it remains in Neutral and follow VW Group towing guidelines for automatic transmissions

With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the override mechanism should still function mechanically. Remove the override cap and use a screwdriver to press the release while manipulating the shifter button. You may need to apply firm pressure. If the shifter remains locked, the steering column lock may also be engaged - the vehicle will need to be towed in Park with front wheels off the ground or on a flatbed.
