⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and parking brake is firmly applied
- Turn the ignition key to position I (ACC) if possible to provide 12V power to the shift lock
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly
- Press the shifter button and move to Neutral
- If brake pedal does not release the shift lock (failed brake light switch), locate the shift lock override slot
- The override slot is typically a small rectangular opening covered by a removable cap, located on the console trim immediately adjacent to the shifter base (usually on the right or front side)
- Remove the cap by prying gently with a flat-blade screwdriver
- Insert a small screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down while simultaneously pressing the shifter button and moving to Neutral
- Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be moved or started (if the issue is only shift-lock related)

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power (completely dead battery), the electronic shift lock remains engaged. You must use the mechanical shift lock override: remove the cap near the shifter base, insert a screwdriver into the override slot, and press down to mechanically release the lock while moving the shifter to Neutral. The ignition will not turn without battery power, but Neutral can still be achieved via the override.
