The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and parking brake is firmly applied
- Turn the ignition key to position I (ACC) if possible to provide 12V power to the shift lock
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly
- Press the shifter button and move to Neutral
- If brake pedal does not release the shift lock (failed brake light switch), locate the shift lock override
- Look for a small rectangular or circular cap on the console trim immediately around the shifter base (commonly on the right side or in front of the shifter)
- Remove the cap by prying gently with a flat-blade screwdriver or fingernail
- Insert a small screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the override slot and press down firmly
- While holding the override down, press the shifter button and move the shifter to Neutral
- Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be moved or started

With a completely dead battery (no 12V power), the shift lock remains engaged electronically. Use the mechanical shift lock override: remove the protective cap near the shifter, insert a tool into the override slot, press down to mechanically release the interlock, and shift to Neutral. The ignition lock will also not release without power, but Neutral is achievable via override.
