The 2019 Subaru Ascent uses a traditional console-mounted automatic transmission shifter lever with electronic shift-lock interlock.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and apply the parking brake firmly
- Turn the ignition to ON (ACC or ON position) if 12V power is available - do not attempt to start the engine
- Locate the shift-lock override: Look for a small rectangular slot with a removable cap on the left side of the shifter housing, near the base of the shifter lever
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver or key to carefully pry off the small cap covering the override slot
- Insert a screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the override slot and press down firmly
- While holding the override tool down, press the shifter release button on the shifter lever and move the shifter to Neutral
- Release the override tool once the shifter is in Neutral position
- The shifter will remain in Neutral even after removing the tool

With zero electrical power
With a completely dead 12V battery, the shift-lock mechanism remains engaged. You must use the mechanical shift-lock override. This override is purely mechanical and works without any electrical power. The override slot is accessible even with zero power, though you may need a flashlight to locate it in the dark.
