🚨 2023 Subaru Ascent: Emergency Neutral

The 2023 Ascent uses a traditional console-mounted CVT shifter with electronic shift lock and a manual override release.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Engage the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels.
  2. Locate the shift lock override cover—it's a small rectangular cap on the left side of the shifter base, adjacent to the shifter button side.
  3. Use a flat-blade screwdriver or similar tool to carefully pry off the shift lock override cover.
  4. With the cover removed, you'll see a small slot or button mechanism inside.
  5. Insert a small screwdriver or similar tool into the slot and press down firmly while simultaneously pressing the shifter button and moving the shifter to Neutral.
  6. If the 12V battery is completely dead, the shift lock override will still work mechanically—no electrical power is required for this override function.
  7. Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be pushed or loaded onto a flatbed.

With zero electrical power
The mechanical shift lock override works without any battery power. The override mechanism is purely mechanical and does not require electrical power to release the shifter. Ensure parking brake is set before attempting.
