🚨 2026 Subaru Ascent: Emergency Neutral

The 2026 Ascent is expected to use a console-mounted CVT shifter similar to previous model years with electronic shift lock and manual override.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Engage the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels.
  2. Locate the shift lock override cover—typically a small rectangular cap on the left side of the shifter base, adjacent to the shifter button side.
  3. Use a flat-blade screwdriver or similar tool to carefully pry off the shift lock override cover.
  4. With the cover removed, you'll see a small slot or button mechanism inside.
  5. Insert a small screwdriver or similar tool into the slot and press down firmly while simultaneously pressing the shifter button and moving the shifter to Neutral.
  6. If the 12V battery is completely dead, the shift lock override should work mechanically—no electrical power is typically required for this override function.
  7. Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be pushed or loaded onto a flatbed.
Shift-lock override location
Likely a small cover cap on the left side of the shifter base (location consistent with 2023-2025 models), but verify as 2026 specifications may vary
With zero electrical power
The mechanical shift lock override should work without battery power if design continues from previous years. The override mechanism is expected to be purely mechanical. Ensure parking brake is set before attempting.
