🚨 2022 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid: Emergency Neutral

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and the vehicle is on level ground or properly chocked
- Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if 12V battery power is available (this may allow normal shift-lock release with brake pedal)
- If no power or brake-light switch failed: locate the shift lock override slot on the left side of the shifter base, near the lower front corner of the shifter surround
- Remove the small rubber cap or plastic cover from the override slot using a flathead screwdriver or your fingernail
- Insert a flathead screwdriver, key, or similar thin tool into the override slot and press down firmly
- While holding the override tool down, press the shifter button and move the shifter from Park to Neutral
- Remove the tool and replace the override cover
- Vehicle can now roll and be winched onto a flatbed

With zero electrical power
With completely dead 12V battery, the shift lock override is mechanical and will work without any power. However, the hybrid system will not function. Use the mechanical override procedure above. Do NOT attempt to jump-start or charge while in Neutral unless the parking brake is engaged and wheels are chocked.

CRITICAL: The Crosstrek Hybrid is a plug-in hybrid. With the hybrid system powered down, the electric motor provides NO parking pawl resistance. The vehicle MUST be transported on a flatbed with all four wheels off the ground. DO NOT tow with any wheels on the ground, even in Neutral, as this can damage the electric drive components and CVT. If the 12V battery is dead, the hybrid system cannot enter transport mode. Flatbed-only towing is mandatory.
