The 2024 Crosstrek Hybrid uses a traditional console-mounted automatic shifter with electronic shift lock.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and set the parking brake firmly.
- Turn the ignition to ON (push START button twice without pressing brake pedal) to provide electrical power to the shifter system.
- Press and hold the brake pedal.
- Press the shift lock override button (if dead battery prevents normal shifting) — locate the small cap or slot near the shifter base, typically to the right or forward of the shifter.
- Pry off the override cap with a flat-blade screwdriver or trim tool.
- Insert a screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down while simultaneously moving the shifter to Neutral.
- Release the parking brake only after the vehicle is secured for towing or movement.

With zero electrical power
With a completely dead 12V battery, the electronic shift lock cannot be overridden electronically. Use the mechanical shift lock override slot (remove cap, press override with screwdriver). You may need to jump-start the 12V battery temporarily to access ON mode for hybrid system safety; however, the mechanical override should allow Neutral access without power.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
The Crosstrek Hybrid has both an engine and electric motor. Even in Neutral, the hybrid system may engage if the 12V battery has any charge. For flatbed towing, ensure the vehicle is in tow mode if available (consult owner's manual) or tow with all wheels off the ground. Do NOT tow with drive wheels on the ground for extended distances, as the electric motor and CVT can be damaged. Flatbed towing is strongly recommended.
