🚨 2019-2024 Subaru Crosstrek: Emergency Neutral

This generation uses a traditional console-mounted lever shifter with electronic shift lock controlled by the brake-light switch.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels
  2. Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if battery has any charge (this may allow normal shifting with brake pedal depressed)
  3. If no power or shift lock won't release, locate the shift lock override slot on the left side of the shifter base, covered by a small rectangular cap
  4. Use a flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade to pry off the cap gently
  5. Insert the screwdriver or key straight down into the override slot while simultaneously pulling the shifter button and moving the lever to Neutral
  6. Keep the override pressed until the shifter is fully in Neutral position
  7. Replace the cap after the vehicle is moved
Shift-lock override location
Small rectangular cap on the left side of the shifter base (driver's side when seated), directly adjacent to the shifter lever
With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the override slot is your only option. The steering wheel will be locked, so the vehicle must be pushed straight or loaded onto a flatbed. Do not attempt to steer with a locked column.
