⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels
- Press the power button to ON mode if the 12V battery has any charge (brake pedal depressed should allow normal shifting)
- If shift lock won't release, locate the shift lock override slot on the left side of the shifter base, covered by a small rectangular cap
- Use a flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade to pry off the cap
- Insert the tool straight down into the override slot while simultaneously pulling the shifter button and moving the lever to Neutral
- Hold the override depressed until the shifter is in Neutral
- For towing or flatbed loading, ensure the hybrid system is completely OFF (not in READY mode)

With zero electrical power
With a completely dead 12V battery, the hybrid system cannot initialize. Use the shift lock override to access Neutral. The steering wheel will be locked without power—vehicle must go straight onto a flatbed. Do NOT tow with wheels on the ground.

CRITICAL: The Crosstrek Hybrid must be transported on a flatbed with all wheels off the ground. Towing with any wheels down can severely damage the hybrid drivetrain and electric motor. Even in Neutral, the electric motor and CVT remain mechanically connected to the wheels.
