🚨 2025 Subaru Crosstrek: Emergency Neutral
The 2025 Crosstrek Hybrid uses a conventional console-mounted shift lever with electronic shift lock, similar to the 2024 design.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and apply the parking brake firmly
- Turn the ignition to ON/ACC position if battery has any charge (press START button twice without brake pedal)
- Locate the shift lock override slot: it is a small rectangular slot with a rubber cap located on the left side of the shifter base, toward the driver
- Use a flathead screwdriver or similar tool to remove the rubber cap covering the override slot
- Insert the tool into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously pulling the shift lever toward you and moving it to Neutral
- If the vehicle has absolutely no electrical power, the override slot mechanical release is your only option—continue pressing the override while shifting
- For flatbed towing, shift to Neutral, but note that the hybrid system may still engage regenerative braking if any power remains

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, use the mechanical shift lock override slot—no electrical workaround exists. The override mechanically disengages the shift lock solenoid.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
HYBRID WARNING: Even in Neutral with ignition off, the electric motor may engage unexpectedly if the 12V system has any charge. For towing beyond a few feet, use a flatbed only. Do not tow with drive wheels on ground for any distance—the electric motor and CVT can be damaged.
