The 2008 Exiga (Japan-market minivan) uses a console-mounted automatic shifter with electronic shift lock, similar to contemporary Legacy/Outback models.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and set the parking brake firmly.
- Turn the ignition key to ON (or ACC if ON is not accessible) to provide electrical power to the shifter system.
- Press and hold the brake pedal.
- If the shifter remains locked due to dead battery or failed brake switch, locate the shift lock override — look for a small rectangular cap or slot on the console near the shifter base.
- Pry off the override cap with a flat-blade screwdriver.
- Insert a screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the override slot and press down firmly.
- While holding the override down, move the shifter from Park to Neutral.
- Release the parking brake only after the vehicle is secured for towing or movement.

With zero electrical power
With a completely dead battery, the mechanical shift lock override must be used. Remove the override cap and press the release mechanism with a screwdriver while moving the shifter to Neutral. This is a purely mechanical operation and does not require electrical power. If the steering column is locked and you need to steer, you may need to jump-start the battery temporarily.
