🚨 2013 Subaru Forester XT: Emergency Neutral
The 2013 Forester XT uses a console-mounted CVT shifter lever with electronic shift lock that requires brake application and ignition power.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Turn the ignition to ON position if battery has any charge remaining (do not start engine)
- Firmly apply and hold the brake pedal
- Locate the shift lock override slot: it is a small rectangular opening with a cover cap on the left side of the shifter base, toward the driver's side
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver or similar tool to pry off the small cover cap
- Insert the screwdriver or key into the override slot and push down firmly while holding the brake
- While holding the override down and brake applied, press the shifter button and move the lever to Neutral
- If the steering wheel is locked, you may need to turn the key to ACC while gently turning the wheel to unlock it before shifting

With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery: The shift lock override will still work mechanically. Insert tool into override slot and push down while moving shifter to Neutral - brake pedal application won't register but the mechanical override bypasses the electronic lock. The steering wheel will remain locked; you'll need to unlock it manually or the vehicle must be dollied with front wheels off the ground. Cannot start engine to charge battery without jump-starting first.
