🚨 1993-2001 Subaru Impreza: Emergency Neutral

The 1993-2001 Impreza (first generation and GC/GM chassis) did not offer CVT transmission; these vehicles had either 4-speed automatic or 5-speed manual transmissions.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. NOTE: CVT transmission was not available in 1993-2001 Impreza - this procedure assumes 4-speed automatic
  2. Ensure parking brake is firmly engaged and wheels are chocked
  3. If manual transmission: depress clutch fully and move shifter to neutral position (no override needed)
  4. If automatic transmission with power: turn ignition to ACC or ON, depress brake pedal, shift to N
  5. If automatic transmission without power: locate shift lock override near shifter base
  6. Look for a small cover cap on the console near the shifter (typically forward or left side of shifter base)
  7. Remove the cap with a flat tool, insert screwdriver into the override slot, press down firmly
  8. While holding override down, move shifter to N with firm manual pressure
Shift-lock override location
Near the shifter base on the console, typically a small cap forward or to the left of the shifter (automatic only)
With zero electrical power
For automatic: use the shift lock override slot and apply manual pressure to move to N. For manual transmission: simply depress clutch and move to neutral - no electrical systems are involved in the shift mechanism.
