🚨 1990 Subaru Justy: Emergency Neutral

The 1990 Justy uses a column-mounted automatic shifter with a mechanical shift lock linked to the ignition key and brake pedal.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and chocked securely
  2. Insert the ignition key and turn it to the ACC or ON position
  3. Depress the brake pedal firmly
  4. Press the release button on the side of the shifter handle and move the lever from Park to Neutral
  5. If the shifter will not move due to a failed brake switch or ignition interlock, locate the shift lock override—look for a small access hole or slot near the base of the column shroud where the shifter enters
  6. Insert a small screwdriver or similar tool into the override slot and press or push to mechanically release the lock
  7. While holding the override, move the shifter to Neutral
  8. Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be rolled or towed
Shift-lock override location
Look for a small access hole or mechanical release near the column shroud base where the shifter lever enters; may require partial removal of lower column cover to access (exact location not widely documented)
With zero electrical power
The column shifter on this generation is largely mechanical. If the ignition key will turn to ACC, the shifter should release with the brake pedal depressed. If the key is stuck or the ignition lock is frozen, you may need to access the manual override near the column or remove the lower steering column cover to manually disengage the shifter pawl.
