🚨 1990 Subaru Legacy: Emergency Neutral

The 1990 Legacy with CVT (if equipped) uses a console-mounted shifter with electronic shift lock activated by the brake pedal.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Set parking brake firmly and chock wheels
  2. Turn ignition key to ACC or ON position if battery has any charge
  3. Locate the shift lock override slot - a small rectangular opening near the base of the shifter console, typically covered by a small cap on the right side
  4. Remove the cap by prying gently with a flathead screwdriver
  5. Insert a small flathead screwdriver or key into the override slot
  6. Press down firmly on the override while simultaneously pressing the shifter button and moving shifter to N
  7. If battery is completely dead and override doesn't work, see no-power notes

With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the shift lock may still be mechanically engaged. The override slot should work mechanically without power. If it doesn't release, you may need to jump the 12V battery momentarily just to disengage the solenoid, then disconnect. As a last resort, the center console can be partially disassembled to access the shift lock solenoid mechanism directly and manually release it.
