🚨 2023 Subaru Outback Wilderness: Emergency Neutral
The 2023 Outback Wilderness uses a console-mounted shift lever with electronic shift lock that requires brake pedal input and ignition power.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Set parking brake and chock wheels
- Attempt to turn ignition to ON position (may work with weak battery)
- If ignition works, depress brake pedal and shift normally to N
- If shift lock won't release, locate the shift lock override cover on the left side of the shifter base
- Pry off the small rectangular plastic cover using a trim tool or small flathead screwdriver
- Insert the override tool (metal key from your key fob works) or small screwdriver into the slot
- Push the override down while simultaneously pressing the shifter release button and moving shifter to N
- Keep tool inserted until shifter is fully in N position
Shift-lock override location
Small rectangular slot on the left side of the shifter base, covered by a plastic cap approximately 1 inch long and 0.25 inches wide
With zero electrical power
The shift lock override is mechanical and should work without battery power. However, the CVT transmission requires the ignition to be in ACC or ON position to fully disengage the parking pawl. If battery is completely dead and you cannot get even ACC power, you MUST flatbed the vehicle - do not attempt to dolly or tow with front wheels down. If you can jump the battery momentarily just to get ACC power and shift to N, disconnect it afterward, but the parking pawl may re-engage without power.
