⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels
- Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if possible (provides 12V power to release shift lock)
- Press and hold the brake pedal
- Press the shift lock release button (small button next to the shifter) and move the shifter to Neutral
- If no electrical power: locate the shift lock override slot - it's a small rectangular slot with a cap cover on the left side of the shifter base near the console
- Remove the cap by prying gently with a flat screwdriver or key
- Insert a flathead screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly
- While holding the override down, move the shifter from Park to Neutral
- The vehicle can now be rolled or towed with the rear wheels on the ground (short distances only)
