🚨 2000 Suzuki Grand Vitara: Emergency Neutral

The 2000 Grand Vitara (first generation) uses a floor-mounted console shifter with electronic shift lock controlled by the brake-transmission shift interlock system.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels
  2. Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if possible (provides 12V power to release shift lock)
  3. Press and hold the brake pedal firmly
  4. Move the shifter from Park to Neutral - the shift lock should release normally with brake applied and key on
  5. If no electrical power or shift lock fails: locate the shift lock override access - look for a small cap or cover on the console near the shifter base, typically on the left side or front
  6. Remove the cap by prying gently with a flat screwdriver
  7. Insert a screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down or push forward (depending on mechanism) to manually release the lock
  8. While holding the override, move the shifter to Neutral
  9. The vehicle can now be towed - use flatbed for AWD models, or ensure transfer case is in 2H for short-distance towing
Shift-lock override location
Small capped override slot near the shifter base on the console, typically on the left or front side - exact location may vary, check console trim around shifter base
With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, use the manual shift lock override. The key does not need to be in any position for the override. Steering wheel will remain locked. For AWD models, flatbed towing is strongly recommended to avoid drivetrain damage.
