🚨 2002 Suzuki Grand Vitara: Emergency Neutral
The 2002 Grand Vitara uses a traditional floor-mounted console shifter with a mechanical shift lock integrated into the shifter gate.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels.
- Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position (if battery has any charge).
- Locate the shift lock override slot—it is typically a small covered slot near the base of the shifter, usually on the right side or front of the shifter gate.
- Remove the small plastic cover (may require a flathead screwdriver to gently pry).
- Insert a flathead screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the override slot and press down firmly.
- While holding the override down, press the brake pedal (if possible) and move the shifter to Neutral.
- If there is no electrical power at all, the override slot mechanical release should still allow shifter movement when depressed—you may not need to press the brake.

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the mechanical shift lock override should still function. Insert a tool into the override slot and press down to release the shifter mechanism, allowing movement to Neutral without needing brake pedal input.
