The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and apply the parking brake firmly
- Attempt to turn the ignition to ON or READY mode if the 12V battery has any charge
- If the hybrid system powers up, press the brake pedal and shift to Neutral normally
- If no power is available, locate the shift-lock override access - look near the shifter base for a small cap or cover
- Remove the cap using a flat tool or by prying gently
- Insert a small screwdriver or similar tool into the override slot
- Press down firmly on the override while attempting to move the shifter to Neutral
- Some force may be required - ensure the parking brake is set before applying pressure
