The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and apply the parking brake firmly
- Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if battery has any charge remaining
- Locate the shift lock override slot, typically found near the base of the shifter assembly (often covered by a small rectangular cap)
- Remove the cap by prying gently with a flathead screwdriver or similar tool
- Insert a flathead screwdriver, key, or similar rigid tool into the override slot
- Press down firmly on the override while simultaneously pressing the shifter button and moving the lever to Neutral
- If the vehicle has no power and won't start, you may need to keep the override depressed while moving the shifter
