🚨 2006 Suzuki Verona: Emergency Neutral

The 2006 Verona uses a traditional floor-mounted console shifter with an electronic shift interlock button on the right side of the shifter handle.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and wheels are chocked
  2. Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if battery has any charge remaining
  3. Locate the small rectangular shift lock override slot—it is on the console surface directly to the left of the shifter base, usually covered by a small plastic cap
  4. Use a flat-blade screwdriver or the metal key blade to pry off the plastic cap
  5. Insert the screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly
  6. While holding the override down, press the brake pedal (if power available) and move the shifter to Neutral
  7. If no power is available, continue pressing the override while moving the shifter—moderate force may be needed

With zero electrical power
With a completely dead battery, the override slot still functions mechanically. Press down firmly in the slot while applying moderate force to move the shifter out of Park. The ignition does not need to be in any position, but the process is easier if you can get even minimal power to unlock the steering column.
