The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and apply the parking brake firmly
- Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if battery has any remaining charge
- Locate the shift lock override slot - it is typically a small rectangular slot near the shifter base, often covered by a small removable cap on the console trim near the shift lever
- Remove the override cap (use a flathead screwdriver or key if needed to pry gently)
- Insert a flathead screwdriver, key, or similar thin tool into the override slot
- Press down firmly on the override mechanism while simultaneously pressing the shifter button and moving the lever to Neutral
- If the 12V battery is completely dead and ignition cannot be turned on, the shift lock override will still function mechanically - continue with the override slot method
