⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly applied and the vehicle is on level ground or properly chocked
- Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if battery power is available
- Locate the shift lock release cover - a small rectangular cap on the left side of the shifter base near the P position
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver or similar tool to carefully pry off the shift lock release cover
- Press and hold the shift lock release button inside the opening with the screwdriver
- While holding the release button down, press the brake pedal (if power available) and move the shifter to N
- If no power: continue holding the release button and physically move the shifter to N without pressing the brake

With zero electrical power
With a completely dead 12V battery, the shift lock release override still functions mechanically. Remove the cover, press and hold the release button, and move the shifter to N. The hybrid system will not be active, but the mechanical override allows shifter movement. Do NOT attempt to start the vehicle or shift beyond N without proper 12V power.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
This is a mild hybrid with ISG (Integrated Starter Generator). With dead battery, the hybrid system is completely inactive and the vehicle cannot self-propel. Flatbed towing is strongly recommended. If dolly towing is attempted with front wheels up, ensure the shifter is in N and the steering is unlocked, but flatbed is the safest method to avoid transmission damage.
