🚨 2002 Suzuki XL-7: Emergency Neutral

The 2002 Suzuki XL-7 uses a traditional console-mounted automatic transmission shifter with a mechanical shift-lock interlock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels.
  2. Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position (if battery has any charge).
  3. Locate the shift-lock override button or slot—it is a small rectangular opening covered by a removable plastic cap, located on the console to the left of the shifter base.
  4. Pry off the plastic cap using a flathead screwdriver or your fingernail.
  5. Insert a flathead screwdriver, pen, or similar tool into the override slot and press down firmly.
  6. While holding the override down, press the brake pedal (if desired, though not required with override) and move the shifter from Park to Neutral.
  7. Release the override tool and verify the shifter remains in Neutral.
  8. The vehicle can now be pushed or rolled onto a flatbed.
Shift-lock override location
Left side of the shifter base on the center console, under a small rectangular plastic cap—approximately 1-2 inches to the left of the shifter lever itself.
With zero electrical power
The shift-lock override is mechanical and does NOT require battery power. Even with a completely dead battery, you can use the override slot to release the shifter from Park. You do not need to jump-start the vehicle to shift into Neutral. However, you will need power (or the mechanical key) to unlock the steering column if it is locked.
