⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels.
- Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position (if battery has any charge).
- Locate the shift-lock override button or slot—it is a small rectangular opening covered by a removable plastic cap, located on the console to the left of the shifter base.
- Pry off the plastic cap using a flathead screwdriver or your fingernail.
- Insert a flathead screwdriver, pen, or similar tool into the override slot and press down firmly.
- While holding the override down, press the brake pedal (if desired, though not required with override) and move the shifter from Park to Neutral.
- Release the override tool and verify the shifter remains in Neutral.
- The vehicle can now be pushed or rolled onto a flatbed.
Shift-lock override location
Left side of the shifter base on the center console, under a small rectangular plastic cap—approximately 1-2 inches to the left of the shifter lever itself.
With zero electrical power
The shift-lock override is mechanical and does NOT require battery power. Even with a completely dead battery, you can use the override slot to release the shifter from Park. You do not need to jump-start the vehicle to shift into Neutral. However, you will need power (or the mechanical key) to unlock the steering column if it is locked.
