🚨 2020 Tesla Model 3: Emergency Neutral

The 2020 Model 3 uses a column-mounted monostable stalk shifter that returns to center after each input, with gear selection shown on the touchscreen.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and chocked - the Model 3 has NO traditional parking pawl you can manually release
  2. Access the tow mode procedure: On the touchscreen, tap Controls > Service > Towing (requires 12V power)
  3. The vehicle will release the parking brake and enable free-rolling for 15 minutes when Transport Mode is activated
  4. If the 12V battery is completely dead, you CANNOT put the vehicle in neutral through normal means
  5. With a dead 12V system, you must jump-start the 12V battery using the jump post under the tow hook access panel in the front bumper (driver side)
  6. Remove the tow hook cover panel by pulling firmly, connect jumper cables to the red (+) post, ground to an unpainted bolt, then access Transport Mode on screen
  7. Tesla does NOT provide a mechanical shift lock override - the system is fully electronic and requires 12V power
With zero electrical power
Without 12V power, the Model 3 cannot be shifted into neutral using any mechanical override. You must jump-start the 12V system via the front jump post (under driver-side tow hook cover in front bumper), then use the touchscreen to enable Transport Mode. The high-voltage battery does not need to be functional, only the 12V accessory system.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
CRITICAL: Model 3 must be transported on a flatbed truck. DO NOT tow with wheels on the ground even in neutral - the electric motors will generate voltage that can damage the drive system. If Transport Mode times out (15 minutes), the parking brake will automatically re-engage. If the 12V system dies during transport, the vehicle will NOT roll freely.
