🚨 2023 Tesla Model 3: Emergency Neutral

The 2023 Model 3 uses a column-mounted monostable stalk shifter that returns to center after each input.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake if functional.
  2. If the 12V battery has any charge, press the brake pedal and use the screen or center console button (if equipped) to access Controls > Service > Towing to enable Transport Mode.
  3. If the screen is completely dead, you must gain 12V power: open the front trunk (frunk) using the manual release pulls inside the tow eye cover on the front bumper, then jump the 12V battery located in the frunk using an external 12V source.
  4. Once 12V power is restored, enable Transport Mode via the touchscreen: tap Controls > Service > Towing > Transport Mode, then press and hold the brake pedal and tap Start on the screen.
  5. Transport Mode allows the vehicle to roll freely; the drive stalk will show 'N' on the screen and the vehicle can be pushed or winched.
  6. If Transport Mode cannot be enabled and the vehicle must be moved immediately, it must be loaded onto a flatbed with all four wheels off the ground using wheel dollies or a car-hauler—dragging a Model 3 with locked motors will cause severe drivetrain damage.
With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the Model 3 cannot shift electronically. You must access the frunk via the manual release cables (behind the tow eye cover, pull both release cables), then jump-start the 12V battery in the frunk. Once minimal 12V power is available, use the touchscreen to enable Transport Mode. Without power, the vehicle cannot be placed in neutral and must be transported on a flatbed with all wheels off the ground.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
CRITICAL: Model 3 has a permanent magnet motor that generates voltage when wheels turn. NEVER tow with any wheels on the ground unless Transport Mode is active. Even with Transport Mode, Tesla recommends flatbed-only transport. Towing with wheels down and motors engaged will destroy the drive unit. Maximum Transport Mode towing distance is 35 feet at under 3 mph if absolutely necessary; otherwise use flatbed only.
