⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake if functional.
- If the 12V battery has any charge, press the brake pedal and use the touchscreen to access Controls > Service > Towing to enable Transport Mode.
- If the main touchscreen is dead but 12V power exists, use the physical backup shifter buttons on the overhead console (near the interior lights, above the rearview mirror area)—press the button corresponding to Drive or Neutral while holding the brake.
- If completely dead with zero 12V power, you must restore power first: open the front trunk (frunk) using the manual release pulls inside the tow eye cover on the front bumper, then jump the 12V lithium battery located in the frunk.
- Once 12V power is restored, enable Transport Mode via the touchscreen: tap Controls > Service > Towing > Transport Mode, then press and hold the brake pedal and tap Start on the screen.
- Transport Mode allows the vehicle to roll freely for loading; the vehicle can be pushed or winched onto a flatbed.
- If Transport Mode cannot be activated, the vehicle must be transported on a flatbed with all four wheels off the ground using dollies—never drag with motors engaged.
With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, all electronic shift controls (touchscreen and overhead backup buttons) are inoperative. Access the frunk via manual release cables behind the front tow eye cover, then jump-start the 12V lithium battery. Once minimal power is available, use either the touchscreen or overhead backup buttons to enable Transport Mode. Without any power, flatbed-only transport with all wheels off the ground is mandatory.

CRITICAL: The 2024 Model 3 has permanent magnet motors that generate voltage when wheels rotate. NEVER tow with any wheels touching the ground unless Transport Mode is properly enabled. Even with Transport Mode active, Tesla specifies flatbed transport only. Towing with engaged motors will cause catastrophic drive unit failure. Transport Mode allows a maximum of 35 feet at under 3 mph if absolutely necessary for positioning; all other movement must be via flatbed.
