🚨 2026 Tesla Model 3: Emergency Neutral
The 2026 Model 3 is expected to continue the touchscreen-primary shifter design with physical backup buttons on the overhead console.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake if functional.
- If the 12V battery has charge, press the brake pedal and access the touchscreen: Controls > Service > Towing > Transport Mode.
- If the touchscreen is non-responsive but 12V power exists, use the physical backup buttons on the overhead console (near interior lights) while pressing the brake pedal.
- If completely dead, restore 12V power first: open the frunk using manual release pulls inside the front tow eye cover, then jump-start the 12V battery in the frunk.
- Once power is restored, enable Transport Mode through the touchscreen by navigating to Controls > Service > Towing > Transport Mode, then hold the brake and tap Start.
- With Transport Mode active, the vehicle can roll freely and be pushed or winched onto a flatbed.
- If Transport Mode cannot be enabled, use a flatbed with wheel dollies to lift all four wheels off the ground—never drag the vehicle with locked motors.
With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, no electronic shifting is possible. Access the frunk through manual release cables behind the tow eye cover, jump-start the 12V battery, then enable Transport Mode via touchscreen or overhead buttons once power is available. Without power restoration, flatbed transport with all wheels off the ground is mandatory.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
CRITICAL: Permanent magnet motors generate voltage when wheels rotate. NEVER tow with wheels on the ground without Transport Mode active. Tesla recommends flatbed-only transport. Towing with engaged motors causes severe drivetrain damage. Transport Mode allows maximum 35 feet at under 3 mph for positioning; otherwise flatbed-only with wheels off the ground.
