🚨 2015 Tesla Model X: Emergency Neutral
The 2015 Model X uses a monostable column-mounted gear selector stalk that returns to center position after each shift input.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and chocked - Tesla vehicles can roll freely in neutral
- If 12V power is available: Press the brake pedal firmly, then push the gear selector stalk on the right side of the steering column upward briefly (half-press, not full press to Park) to shift into Neutral
- The stalk returns to center automatically - Neutral will be displayed on the instrument cluster
- With NO 12V power: You CANNOT shift this vehicle into neutral electronically - the electronic shifter requires 12V power to function
- For towing with NO power: Access the 12V battery in the front trunk (frunk), connect an external 12V power source or jump starter to restore minimal power, then use the gear stalk to select neutral
- If 12V cannot be restored: The vehicle MUST be transported on a flatbed truck - do NOT attempt to tow with any wheels on the ground
- Once in neutral with power: Engage Transport Mode via the touchscreen (Controls > Service > Towing) to maintain neutral and release the parking brake for loading
- Transport Mode requires sufficient high-voltage battery charge - if HV battery is depleted, flatbed loading may require wheel skates
With zero electrical power
With a completely dead 12V battery, there is NO mechanical shift-lock override or manual release mechanism. You MUST restore 12V power by accessing the low-voltage battery located in the front trunk (frunk) and connecting an external 12V jump starter or power supply. The front trunk has a manual release accessible from under the front tow eye cover (remove the cover, connect 12V power to the red/black wires to pop the frunk latch). Only after restoring 12V power can you shift to neutral via the gear stalk.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
CRITICAL: Tesla Model X MUST be transported on a flatbed with all four wheels OFF the ground. Towing with wheels down will cause severe damage to the electric drive unit as it generates unwanted voltage. The high-voltage battery must have sufficient charge to engage Transport Mode. If HV battery is completely dead, special flatbed procedures with skates or wheel dollies are required. Never tow a Model X with driven wheels on the ground - this causes catastrophic motor and inverter damage not covered by warranty.
